Duties and Responsibilities
The compensation specialist is involved in personnel-related planning and decision-making. He conducts research and analysis in different areas involving compensation, such as compensation statistics and market analysis.
Duties include conducting position evaluations, job classifications, preparing job descriptions, assessing the budgetary impact of compensation decisions and providing oversight of compliance with regulations and labor laws.
The compensation specialist collaborates with others to determine staffing needs, design and adjust salary structures and compensation packages and develop policies and procedures.
Education and Experience
Employers usually require compensation specialists to hold a bachelor's degree in a program of study related to human resources or business administration, although some employers accept an associate's degree or a combination of education and experience. Required certifications might include the Professional in Human Resources or Senior Professional in Human Resources, both offered by the Society for Human Resource Management, or the Certified Compensation Specialist offered by the World at Work Society of Certified Professional. Some positions require human resource experience, such as one to five years, with increasing levels of responsibility.
